What the procedure involves
- Pre-Anesthetic Evaluation: Physical exam and recommended bloodwork to ensure your pet is a good candidate for anesthesia.
- Dental X-Rays: Full-mouth radiographs help identify hidden issues such as root infections, bone loss, and tooth resorption.
- Scaling and Polishing: Plaque and tartar are removed from all tooth surfaces, followed by polishing to help slow future buildup.
- Periodontal Assessment: We evaluate gum health and look for signs of periodontal disease.
- Extractions if Necessary: Diseased or damaged teeth may be removed to eliminate pain and infection.
- Recovery and Discharge: Your pet is monitored during recovery, and we provide clear at-home care instructions before they go home.
Anesthesia and pet dental care
Some pet owners have concerns about anesthesia, particularly for older pets. It is a reasonable thing to think carefully about. What is important to understand is that anesthesia-free dental cleanings, while they may remove surface tartar, cannot address what is happening below the gumline. They cannot take dental radiographs, probe periodontal pockets, or treat disease where it actually lives. A pet that appears to have clean teeth after an anesthesia-free cleaning may still have significant disease that has gone undetected. Modern veterinary anesthesia is very safe when proper protocols are followed.
