Your pet cannot describe their symptoms. They cannot tell you where it hurts, how long it has been going on, or whether it is getting worse. Diagnostics bridge that gap. At Horse Heaven Hills Pet Urgent Care & Veterinary Center, we have invested in a full range of diagnostic capabilities so that most testing can be completed without sending your pet elsewhere. When a case calls for specialized analysis, we work with trusted outside laboratories to get results that inform the best possible care.
In-house laboratory testing
Our in-house lab delivers results within minutes, which matters when a pet is sick and waiting is not an option. We run complete blood counts, chemistry panels, urinalysis, fecal testing, and several other common diagnostics on site, allowing us to assess and act during the same visit.
- Complete Blood Count (CBC): Evaluates red and white blood cells and platelets to screen for infection, inflammation, and anemia.
- Chemistry Panel: Assesses kidney, liver, and pancreatic function, along with blood sugar and electrolyte levels.
- Urinalysis: Screens for kidney disease, urinary tract issues, hydration status, and metabolic conditions.
- Thyroid Testing: Detects common thyroid disorders in senior cats and dogs.
- Fecal Parasite Screening: Identifies intestinal parasites that may affect your pet's health.
- Heartworm Testing: Annual blood test used to detect heartworm infection in dogs.
- Tick-Borne Disease Panel: Screens for common diseases transmitted by ticks when indicated.
- Cytology: Examines cells from lumps, masses, or fluid samples to help diagnose abnormalities.
Digital X–Ray
Digital radiography is fast, produces high-resolution images, and exposes pets to less radiation than conventional film X-ray. We use digital X-ray to evaluate the bones, joints, chest, and abdomen.
Common uses include:
- Identifying fractures, joint disease, and bone abnormalities
- Evaluating heart size and lung fields for respiratory or cardiac conditions
- Detecting foreign objects in the digestive tract
- Assessing the spine for disc disease or other changes
- Dental radiography as part of professional dental cleanings
Ultrasound
Ultrasound uses sound waves to produce real-time images of soft tissue structures that X-ray cannot fully evaluate. It is a non-invasive procedure that does not require anesthesia in most cases.
We use ultrasound to assess:
- Abdominal organs including the liver, spleen, kidneys, bladder, adrenal glands, and gastrointestinal tract
- The heart (echocardiography) to evaluate cardiac structure and function
- Masses and nodules to help characterize their nature and origin
- Reproductive organs
Diagnostics as part of every stage of care
Diagnostic testing is not only for sick pets. Wellness bloodwork and urinalysis catch changes before symptoms appear. Pre-anesthetic panels protect patients before surgical procedures. Senior screening panels establish a baseline to compare against as your pet ages. Fecal testing protects both your pet and your family.
Some tests require specialized equipment or analysis that goes beyond what in-house labs can provide. For these cases, we work with accredited veterinary reference laboratories to ensure accurate, reliable results.
