Not every surgery is an emergency. Many of the most important procedures your pet will ever need are ones you can schedule in advance, with time to prepare, ask questions, and feel confident going in.
At Horse Heaven Hills Pet Urgent Care & Veterinary Center, our general practice surgery services cover the planned procedures that are a routine part of a pet's life, as well as soft tissue surgeries that address conditions diagnosed during wellness care or diagnostic workups. Our surgical team brings the same thoroughness to a scheduled spay as they do to a more complex soft tissue procedure, because every surgery matters.
Surgical services we offer
Our veterinary team performs a variety of routine and advanced surgical procedures for dogs and cats. Every surgical recommendation is based on your pet's diagnosis, overall health, and individual needs. Before surgery, we review the procedure, discuss anesthesia and recovery expectations, and answer any questions you may have.
- Spay and Neuter: Routine procedures that help prevent unwanted litters while providing important long-term health and behavioral benefits.
- Mass and Lump Removal: Surgical removal of growths that may be causing discomfort, changing in appearance, or require biopsy for diagnosis.
- Soft Tissue Surgery: Includes wound and laceration repair, abscess treatment, eyelid corrections, bladder surgery, gastrointestinal procedures, biopsies, skin reconstruction, aural hematoma repair, and perineal urethrostomy (PU surgery) in cats.
What to expect before, during, and after surgery

Pre-Surgical Evaluation
Every surgical patient receives a physical exam before their procedure. We recommend pre-anesthetic bloodwork for all surgical patients to confirm organ function and identify any conditions that could affect anesthesia. For older patients or those with known health conditions, additional screening may be recommended. This step is about giving your pet the safest possible experience on the day of surgery.

Anesthesia and Monitoring
Your pet is under continuous monitoring throughout every procedure. We track heart rate, respiratory rate, blood pressure, oxygen saturation, and body temperature from the time anesthesia is induced through recovery. Anesthetic protocols are tailored to each patient based on their age, weight, health status, and the procedure being performed. Pain management is built into every surgical plan, not added as an afterthought.

Recovery and Aftercare
Your pet recovers in our care before going home. We monitor them through the initial recovery period and discharge them only when they are stable, comfortable, and ready. At discharge, you will receive clear written instructions covering activity restrictions, incision care, medications, and what signs to watch for at home. Our team is available to answer questions during recovery, and we schedule follow-up appointments to check healing progress.
Preparing your pet for surgery
Once a surgery is scheduled, we will give you specific instructions based on the procedure. In general:
- Most surgeries require fasting from food the night before. Water is typically fine until a few hours before the procedure.
- Let us know about any medications your pet is currently taking, including supplements.
- Bring your pet in calm and on leash or in a carrier.
- Plan for your pet to rest quietly for the remainder of the day after discharge.
